Private Bond Fund Helps Fight Deportation PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 13 October 2008 00:00
Boston financier and multi-millionaire Robert Hildreth likes illegal aliens. So when federal authorities raided a garment factory in New Bedford MA last year and removed illegal workers to a detention center in Texas, Hildreth stepped in and posted bond for 40 aliens at a cost of $116,800.

Thus a pilot version of a national bond assistance program for illegal aliens was born to counter and help obstruct the work of stepped up government work place raids. Called the National Immigration Bond Fund more than $300,000 collected has bailed out 90 aliens in a half dozen work site raids so far.

Now the group is trying to help as many of the 600 aliens as possible of the Howard Industries plant raid in Laurel MS that authorities targeted in August. So far they have $150,000 for bonds and are desperately trying to raise more money.

Government workplace raids only bring in a tiny fraction of employed illegals but arrests have risen from 510 in 2002 to about 5,000 yearly. To increase the number of aliens they can help and to ensure the invader just doesn''t skip showing up for court, the fund will pay up to half the invaders bail if the invader can come up with the rest. Generally bail is returned if all court appearances are made. Posting bond of an illegal alien costs anywhere from $2,000 to $24,000.

It remains to be seen whether the bond fund will buy more than a few extra months for aliens to get their affairs in order before deportation. Illegal aliens have no rights to government paid defense attorneys in immigration court if they can''t pay for a private attorney.
